Join Us Tomorrow for a Free Art History Talk at the Westport Library: America's 250th

History has a way of feeling more real when you live somewhere old.

Westport, MA doesn't require much imagination to connect to the past. The stone walls along Old County Road have been here for centuries. The farms are still working the same land. The coastline looks more or less the same as it did 250 years ago. This town existed before America had a name, and that means this anniversary feels personal here in a way it might not everywhere else.

When the country marks 250 years this summer, it deserves to be celebrated with something more than a cable news countdown. With art. With history. With the kind of conversation that actually helps you understand where we came from.

The Westport Free Public Library is offering exactly that tomorrow.

Art For Your Mind at the Westport Free Public Library: Saturday, May 30

Saturday, May 30 | 2:00–3:00 PM

Revolutionary images portraying events of America's beginning

Art Historian Jill Sanford brings the revolutionary era to life through the images that defined it: the portraits, the scenes, the paintings that shaped how a brand-new nation understood itself. These weren't passive decorations hung on parlor walls. They were propaganda, pride, and storytelling all at once, and Sanford knows how to make you see them that way.

If you caught the May 16 session on America's earliest self-taught artists from colonial times, Saturday is the next chapter. If you missed it, no matter. This talk stands completely on its own.

Who should come? Honestly, anyone. But a few groups in particular.

If you have older children (middle school age and up), this is the kind of afternoon that sneaks up on them as educational. Engaged before they realize they're learning. If you have a parent or grandparent who grew up on American civics the old-fashioned way, this is a genuine gift of a Saturday. And if you've been meaning to spend more time at the library, this is a good reason to start.

It's free. It's one hour. It's at 408 Old County Road.

And it's the kind of thing that leaves you feeling a little more connected to the place you live and the country it belongs to. Westport has been here since before this country had a name. Celebrating 250 years of America here feels right.

Come tomorrow. No registration required.
