Loaning out more than books?

A recent article in the Boston Globe by Gracie Warda, Globe correspondent, reports how some libraries now offer a range of items that you'd never expect to be on loan. Single-use goods, seasonal tools, one-time experiences, new hobbies, etc. are available for checkout.

These collections go far beyond the books, journals, and media that have been the primary focus of traditional libraries. The concept is not new and the offerings vary from library to library. Items are typically stocked using library funds and occasionally donations from patrons.

The Westport Free Public Library offers its own version of a Library of Things. Members can borrow items like a telescope, internet hot spots, electronic services, etc. Museum passes/discounts to Buttonwood Park Zoo, New Bedford Whaling Museum, Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Science are available on a first come, first serve basis. In addition, the library also offers a Massachusetts State Parks Pass for use at any State Park including Horseneck Beach. This year's Seed Library, housed in an old card catalog in the lobby, was a huge success. Please contact the Library's staff at 508-636-1100 for details.

Your donations to FOWL help make many of the above possible and allow us to provide educational and entertaining programs for all ages. When you donate to FOWL, funding is also used to help purchase children and adult books, CD books, and DVDs.
